By lunchtime, the hole was still nowhere near deep enough.

A London sales executive has returned to work with his head still stuck in a massage table, after firefighters concluded it would be impossible to remove without causing extensive damage.

Old chewing gum may be holding the world together, according to a new study that found several key pieces are now performing “important structural work.”

Researchers said the gum, much of which has been flattened into pavements, bus stops and the underside of school desks, appears to be bonding parts of the Earth’s crust that “should probably have come loose years ago.”

“We began by looking at urban cleanliness,” said Professor Graham Voss. “But the more gum we removed, the more things started wobbling.”

The study found one piece outside a train station was helping to stabilise a loose paving slab, while a larger deposit beneath a pedestrian crossing appeared to be holding the Earth’s crust in “roughly the right place.”

Experts have now warned councils against aggressive gum removal until a full structural assessment has been carried out.

“It’s disgusting,” Professor Voss added. “But so is most infrastructure once you get close enough.”

A groundbreaking study from the University of Cambridge has challenged the long-held belief that Jesus fed the five thousand with five loaves and two fish, after archaeologists reportedly uncovered several ancient syringes near the site.

"I had this moment of clarity," he explained. "It feels so good taking your socks off… What if we never had to put them on in the first place?"

This line of thought led Professor Toerag to undertake what he describes as "a PhD's worth of research" into the history of the garments.

"The inside of shoes is uncomfortable," Professor Toerag explained. "Instead of making comfortable shoes, socks were invented to wear inside them. We accepted the solution without ever questioning the problem."

Professor Toerag believes the recent diversification of sock types is further evidence of the industry becoming increasingly manipulative.

"When I was younger there were just socks. Now there are socks for running, walking, hiking, cycling, compression, thermal, and even those weird plastic socks you’re supposed to wear over your shoes. Every year seems to bring about another way our feet have been suffering without us realising."

Professor Toerag is now petitioning shoe manufacturers to include a comfortable fabric inside as standard.

When asked if going sockless would result in unpleasant-smelling shoes, Professor Toerag explained he has no sense of smell.

His research has since expanded beyond socks altogether.

"Humans managed for thousands of years without modern shoes, and even longer without socks. The more I look into it, the less convinced I become. We've been thinking about feet entirely the wrong way. I'm not expecting big shoe to change over night, but it’s a start.”

The Daily Pyre has not independently verified Professor Stan K. Toerag's findings. We are also unable to recommend going sockless inside shoes at this time, pending further investigation.

This week's letter comes from a towel, who wrote in complaining it feels undervalued by the household it belongs to.

The towel has spent the last three years at the back of the airing cupboard, only surfacing recently to help mop up a child's sick. It claims to have watched several newer towels get regular use, and is going through a very though time, although it still believes it has value left to give.

When asked whether the vomit incident had anything to do with its prolonged unemployment, the towel replied:

Unfortunately, the problem existed before then. My mother always said I was exactly the wrong size. Too large for hands and too small for a body.”

A volunteer litter picker from Dorset has admitted he increasingly sees himself as “one of the last people keeping this country together.”

Paul Henderson, 53, spends around two hours each Sunday collecting crisp packets, drinks cans and the occasional vape from his local park.

“It’s not about recognition,” he explained. “It’s just nice knowing civilisation would probably collapse without people like me.”

Henderson believes the general public has become “remarkably dependent” on his efforts, despite covering roughly 0.004% of the town each week.

“I don’t like to think about what would happen if I took a weekend off.”

Friends say Henderson has recently begun referring to litter picking as “public service”, while quietly shaking his head whenever he passes someone who drops as much as a receipt.

The Daily Pyre understands Henderson returned home shortly afterwards to find his own recycling had blown across the driveway.

A petition calling for petitions to be renamed has caused widespread confusion after thousands of people accidentally signed it while trying to object to the change.

The campaign, launched by local man Stephen Price, argues the word “petition” has become “tired, overused and emotionally demanding.”

“I just think people would be more likely to sign something called a democratic nudge,” Price explained.

However, critics say the proposal has created a serious administrative problem, with several counter-petitions now demanding the petition to be withdrawn.
